Background<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hello! I am Ethan, the founder of KongMing Educations. I am the 2022 Proxime Accessit of Westlake Boys High School and a New Zealand National Top Scholar. Immigrated to NZ at nine, I found English to be a herculean hurdle. With my parents\u2019 support, I worked hard to retain my Chinese mother tongue whilst studying English; by Year 9, I finally became fluent, and subsequently developed a keen interest in English literature in my pursuit for academic excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back, having navigated these challenges myself, I fully understand the hurdles students face in their studies (particularly with English). I have always had the thoughts, if only my younger self had the version of me today to help him in high school! Therefore, today I am delighted to have the opportunity to be not just a tutor, but a mentor in my students\u2019 academic journey, university entrance, and career pathways.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

My Story of Top in German<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I originally intended to learned German as a challenge for myself to learn a new language before I finish high school, how cool would it be to be able to speak another language for the rest of your life right? I never made getting Top Scholar my goal, in fact, I didn’t even make getting a NZQA scholarship my motivation in the first place. I thought I’d attempt the scholarship exam just to see where my progress was in learning German. This is not to make myself humble to make the achievement even more outstanding, but the key takeaways is that, students should love the process (which is learning) of getting good grades, rather than the good grades themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From this achievement, I’ve learned the valuable lesson that to get good at anything in life, you need:
– The courage to start
– The brains to learn
– And the heart to never give up
And the good news is, you already have all three!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

My Philosophies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On Learning<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Contrary to common practise, the most effective learning strategy is not rote-learning, but rather, knowing what you are learning, develop an unquenchable interest, and cultivate your own study method. In other words, the skill of \u2018learning how to learn\u2019. I believe that once you have unlocked and sharpened this skill to a certain level, you might not achieve top of subject in the whole country as I have with German, but I am confident you will be ahead of 95% of your peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Teaching<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I believe good teachers are those who are expert in their subjects, and great teachers are those who are likewise, but also know how it feels to fail, to not understand, to not get it, to have made all the mistakes in that subject, and to know the moment when it clicked. A teacher who can sympathise with their students and lead them out of the valleys in their academic journey. A great teacher is one who can be touched with all the feelings of the student\u2019s weaknesses in that subject, who was once just like them yet has achieved what they want to achieve, that the students can then come to him\/her with confidence to receive timely help. The problem with being \u201ctoo good\u201d at the subject you are teaching (from the perspective of the students), is that it is hard to step into their shoes, because you always just don\u2019t really know what it feels like to not get it. And this is why I am willing to teacher and to mentor, especially, in the subject of English Literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
